I do not have a green thumb. Mr. Green Jeans was not my favorite character on the Captain Kangaroo show. I don't especially like planting, replanting, cutting, trimming, watering, keeping in-sun, keeping out of the sun, weeding or anything that has to do with gardening. Whether it's flowers or veggies...it's not my cup of tea.
So it's only right that I have a son that wants a garden, loves to plant, watch things grow and water til his hearts content. Um, yeah....
Young C-man wants a garden. A full fledged lets-grow-something-we-can-eat-mom garden. Ok. Huh???? Where do you even start???
Apparently you start in the kitchen. Oh, before that you must go to Menards and randomly pick out seeds of things you will eat, even though you have no earthly clue on how to get them to that point. Then you come back to your kitchen. And start planting.
One of the things we decided to grow was cilantro. One of my favorite spices. Really? I don't have favorite spices.....I really like cilantro in salsa and salsa is one of my favorite foods ( I do have favorite foods), therefore - cilantro, by reason of default, is a favorite spice. Right. Anyhoo - cilantro was on the list. Hubby says we can grow it inside first, then transplant to outside. Transplant??? I thought you had to have a MD after your name for that. Guess not.
So we buy plantable cups to start our cilantro in and decide that the remainder of the veggies will go outside when the ground has thawed and we can actually dig/build/create a real garden. C-man and I come home, and start at it.

We brought home lots of seeds. These will grow into lots of nourishing food in the coming months to nourish my young
children's growing bodies. Or I will prove my non-green-
thumbness - they won't grow, or if they do sprout Bugs Bunny will get to them before we do and they'll be gone. It's a toss up......

How fun. I love to garden--just don't have the time nor space. My kids absolutely love to work in my parent's huge garden area. Enjoy the journey with your son and may your thumb start to green just a bit. But, heck you can't have all talents right? That just simply wouldn't be fair if you could sew, quilt, card make, AND garden with such talent. :)
And I read your comment about your son freezing at practice. I can't even imagine. Wow. Yes, you should come west for sure--your boys can practice in shorts and then come swimming with us after. Sounds better than freezing.
Dear C,
Good luck on your garden! I am excited to see what veggies you selected! If things do not sprout as planned from your indoor planting project, you are more than welcome to come to my house when it's time to plant our garden (which is in about 1 month). I would love to have the extra help speading the horse manure, moving the compost pile to the garden, and running the tiller to work all of that into the dirt. :-) You could also help with the planting and steaking process!

looks like fun! zach is my little gardening side kick. we have fun with it. it looks like you picked good things to start with. and mmmmmmmmm...cilantro AND salsa!
How exciting! We have a little garden every year and I just love popping to the back yard for fresh picked salad fixings. My dad always had a great garden when I was growing up. You should think about starting to compost, too. It pretty easy to start a small compost, then just throw in your vegetable scraps, egg shells, etc. and mix. Pretty much just playing in dirt. Your son should enjoy that, too. Good luck with the seedlings and I look forward to your update. =]
